A brown spot is not a diagnosis.

Sun spots, melasma, and marks left after inflammation can look alike—but planning for them can be very different.

Three common stories behind dark marks

Sun-related spots

Long-term UV exposure can contribute to visible discoloration. Selected spots may be appropriate for light-based treatment after assessment.

Melasma

Often appears as patches and can be affected by sun and visible light. Sun protection and topical care are central; procedures require careful judgment.

Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation

Marks can follow acne, irritation, or injury. Treating the underlying cause and avoiding additional irritation matter.

Why it changes the plan

Using a device on the wrong concern can disappoint or aggravate pigmentation. We consider history, skin tone, patterns, and triggers, and refer for medical assessment when appropriate.

A dermatologist should evaluate a spot that is new, changing, bleeding, or otherwise concerning.
